Talking about Yue Minjun, people often think of his "silly laugh". The rise of Yue Minjun is indeed of some legendary sense. It's not only because that his "silly laugh" has become a style and a symbol, but also because the conciseness and frankness of such style and symbol as well as the straightforward force in it. As Yue Minjun and his "silly laugh" continue to appear in domestic and international exhibitions, it has not only become one of the iconic symbols of contemporary Chinese art, but also injected a fresh vitality into Chinese contemporary art, together with his childhood memories and romantic fantasies, as well as the endless searches filled with spiritual confusion. In this way, Yue Minjun occupies a real and solid position in the territory of contemporary art.
In the face of Yue Minjun's various visual texts, people can’t help imagining when exploring Yue’s artistic development. It should be said that it is the power of imagination that gives Yue Minjun a timeless ability, which allows him to complete the self-transcendence again and again, and filled his artistic state with an impulse and passion of innovation. In his interview with Yue Minjun, critic Li Xianting said that “Yue Minjun is an important cynical realist artist. He repeats his own image as the model, and makes all kinds of strange and ridiculous actions, as well as cheekily grinning expressions. Through the self-mockery in these actions and expressions, he demonstrates today's empty and boring spiritual world. His simple painting techniques similar to commercial advertisements, gaudy pictures and monotonous colors highlight a superficial, humorous and boring atmosphere. The biggest feature of Yue Minjun's work is the mixture of the strength of pop and poster art and a simple visual power.” Through Li Xianting’s description, we can outline Yue Minjun’s art style. Anyone knows art history understands that the judgment of an artist’s position in the art history must be combined with specific social and cultural background. Without concrete historical context, it’s difficult to analyze an artist’s works and style isolated and partially. Hence, to reconstruct the historical context and analyze Yue Minjun in the specific social and historical situation will help us get a comprehensive understanding of Yue Minjun and his art.
